We are pleased to revisit our series in which members of gallerist Niza Knoll’s book club brings to life characters and scenes of a common book through visual art.
This year’s presentation is a mash-up of two titles, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. The storylines are related only in the visual opportunities they present, and a group of creatives who, when deciding between the two, chose not to limit their imagination and elected to do both!
Each participating artist—Aliki McCain, Niza Knoll, Sally Lewis, Pat Lickly, Kristi Melodia, Ellen Reynolds and Georgianne Rollman—brings a distinct style and vision to the show, with some pieces depicting characters unique to one book, while others creatively intertwine the worlds. Mediums include paintings, ceramic sculptures, collage, fabric, mixed media and more.
The classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland tells the story of a little girl named Alice who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world of anthropomorphic creatures. Remarkably Bright Creatures is about a widow and her unlikely connection with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus who lives at a local aquarium. This story was recently released as a feature film starring Sally Field and is currently available to stream on Netflix.
Past years' exhibitions have featured art inspired by books such as A Gentleman in Moscow, Where the Crawdads Sing, and The Music of Bees, and have been embraced by other book clubs who have planned outings to visit the exhibition as a group.
