Window to the sky by Carla Lopez
Collage on bristol paper

For many of us, our reality has felt shattered for months. How do we make sense of those broken pieces? My images attempt to create meaning out of this rupture through collages that literally put pieces back together and drawings that focus on some of those individual fragments. In the collages, I seek ways to reconcile the fragmented narratives of our society. The images extracted from magazines explore the disconnect created by a capitalist world. The drawings offer a different perspective on themes of existentialism through an emphasis on detail and tone, which works to slow down the gaze. Together, the collages and drawings convey the distortion of time and perception of our world inherent to major events like a pandemic and protests for racial justice.
