Urban Unrest by Lois Lupica
Cold Wax Medium + Oil Paint on Cradleboard
24" x 24" x 2"
Painting with encaustic medium as well as with cold wax requires a strong physical interaction with materials.
When I am encaustic painting, I love to see the transformation of wax from liquid to molten to solid, creating movement, texture, depth and relief. I scrape and mold, and sometimes just let the wax move on its own. I mix my own pigments with beeswax and resin to get the exact color, shade and tone.
In my cold wax work, I lay down multiple layers of oil paint mixed with cold wax medium, and then scrape and remove with solvent portions of the layers to reveal what is beneath. Most often, I am surprised by what emerges.
This crazy year has been both horrifying and inspiring, and my recent work reflects my sense of these times.
