On the Edge of Distopia by Jane Mahoney
Oil on Board
30 Inches x 24 Inches x 1.75 Inches
With the advent of COVID, I've gone through a series of feelings and reactions. At first, I was painting humorous pieces like a roll of toilet paper, or even on a grocery bag. As I realized the severity of a pandemic everything was heightened and my feelings became fluid, rolling from one extreme to the next. These pieces represent where I am now: more resigned, more seasoned. I am one day fearless, one day depressed, and the next accepting the new normal. Awash in this tidal pool of feelings I grab moments of joy that I find give me hope. These three paintings are meant to symbolize my experience during COVID and the extremes of how it has made me feel, and how I have since grown stronger despite the odds. This dystopia is terrifying, but I am able to face the unknown with courage. I am determined to find solace despite the uncertainty that clouds our lives every day. I have found small moments that allow me to come up for air, experience a reprieve, and inspire a new sense of hope.
