Acrylic, glass, upcycled paper, reclaimed wood
23" x 28" x 3"

The "room where it happens" in a mother's brain. The joy, the guilt, the passion, the pain-- all are captured here as the machine running the system running melts down. An AI created graphic expanded into a 3-d mixed media work complete with reclaimed wood and hundreds of pieces of paper sculpture.

MIDJOURNEY PROMPT: A widescreen rendering of the inside of a brain as if it were a room in a house. On the left of the chamber is a machine with a screen reading "SYSTEM FAILURE" and a slot that feeds out blank post it notes. On the left, the notes are neatly arranged on pretty bulletin boards. To the right, the notes become more haphazard, turning into shadows and disarray and the notes are piled in a giant heap.

We wanted to create a portrait of the brain of a mother on the verge of mental breakdown. Many of the "notes" are motivational, taken from greeting cards/gratitude journals ("less screen time, more dream time"). Many are aspirational goals for a "perfect" female life. Countless others are simply mundane. Finally-- after her own expectations, toxic feminine positivity culture, and the daily struggle of everyday life overwhelm the system keeping her running-- the rest are dark and despairing, a cry for help in a world where women are expected to always Have It All Together.
