Broken Current by Carol Bevins
Oil, oil stick and cold wax on canvas.
30 Inches x 30 Inches x 1.5 Inches
In 2015, I painted a few works addressing racial inequality in our culture. My own personal response to the deaths of so many people of color at the hands of the police and I mostly kept them hidden. Last November, I made a few small studies using neutral tones, grays and browns, blacks and whites and devoid of vivid color as is my usual wont. In late spring of 2020, I decided to build on these studies and create a series of larger paintings, again working in neutrals and black and white. Then as now, the news was filled with inexplicable deaths, cruelty and racial ugliness. These new works were created in the midst of this tension. They make me feel awkward. Is this my story to work with or will it appear I am capitalizing on these issues? Will the paintings be misunderstood and appear racist themselves? I don't have the answers to these questions. I can only respond that wrestling with and expressing my emotional reactions to the world at large, I paint what I am compelled to paint.
