Mark Stokesbury - Artist and Writer

I was born and raised in the bucolic countryside of Frederick, MD., and am an east-coaster and lowlander through and through.

Since jettisoning my “serious” --read depressing-- art phase, I’ve instead attempted to create work that brings some small pleasure to the viewer. In as much, my motto has loosely become “life is depressing enough, your artwork should not serve to further depress you”. I’ve often been told that my artwork makes people smile, which is a nice thing.

Much of my work is what I’ve termed ‘fabric paintings’. These fabric paintings are a mixed media combination of hand drawn, and colored, pen and ink images; cut and attached to a stretched fabric background; that has been overpainted, and then sealed.

When I am not making art I write, garden, work, spend lots of time with family, and volunteer. I just finished my first children’s book(both authored and illustrated), to answer the eponymous question, ‘Who Let Rocky Out of His Cage?’.

My work is in the collection of Children’s Hospital Colorado, and many private collections.
